2018: Skelly & Couch's review of the year

Over the past decade, Skelly & Couch has grown from a practice of two to a thriving, 40-strong limited company with five directors.

2018 has been an exceptional year, with outstanding investment in our team, their development and the financial security of our company through the purchase of our canalside studio offices in a vibrant, creative area of North London.

Our success in winning new business has been greater than ever with 50 new projects secured across a wide spectrum of sectors, including conservation, commercial, educational, public and residential. They include developer HUB’s outstanding large town regeneration scheme next to Maidenhead Crossrail station with architect Studio Egret West; Phase 2 of the substantial renewal of the Gascoigne East estate in Barking, east London with White Arkitekter; and an extensive fit-out project for US concert tickets seller Live Nation with Gensler at the Grade II-listed Farmiloe Building in Clerkenwell, where we recently worked with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

Among our high-profile completions in 2018 was the much-lauded restoration of Battersea Arts Centre with Haworth Tompkins and the outstanding refurbishment of the iconic, Brutalist Preston Bus Station by John Puttick Associates.

Many of our projects were recognised with the cream of architectural prizes, including two 2018 National RIBA Awards (for City of London Freemen’s School Swimming Pool and Chadwick Hall student housing at Roehampton University), five 2018 Regional RIBA Awards and three Civic Trust honours. For the second consecutive year, one of our projects, in this year’s case Chadwick Hall, was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize. Skelly & Couch was honoured to be an Engineering Consultancy of the Year Finalist in the 2018 Building Awards.
