Fitzroy Park House
Surrounded by natural landscape on the eastern fringe of Hampstead Heath, north London, this spectacular contemporary house within the Highgate Conservation area replaces a down-at-heel 1950s house of two storeys.
The design strategy takes advantage of the sloping site by creating new additional spaces within the lower garden level. Its upper level cantilevers out among the tree canopies and a bridge leads into the heart of the house, which opens up to double-height day-lit views.
The low-energy house is designed to be naturally ventilated and well insulated, and skylights are placed strategically throughout the building to bring in further daylight and ensure a close connection with nature.
The striking wooden panels on the upper storey provide secure ventilation at night and the overall timber construction offers strongly sustainable and aesthetic qualities.
